Tooth Extractions

A tooth can reach a point where fixing it is no longer possible. Deep decay, a break below the gum line, or repeat infection can all get there.

If a tooth is hurting right now, call the office during open hours. We will get you in as soon as the schedule allows. The office is open Monday through Thursday and closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Removing a tooth is one of the restorative dentistry choices our dentist offers here in Green. It is also the one we work hardest to avoid.

What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw bone. Our dentist numbs the area with local anesthetic, loosens the tooth, and lifts it out. Most routine extractions are finished in one visit.

This page covers routine extractions only. That means a tooth that came in normally and can be removed with hand instruments.

Wisdom teeth are a different job. Our dentist refers those to a trusted oral surgeon, along with any tooth that needs surgery to remove.

Problems Tooth Extractions Solve

Taking out a failing tooth ends problems that will not settle down on their own.

  • Constant pain from decay that has reached the nerve
  • Infection that keeps returning in the same tooth after other treatment
  • A tooth cracked or broken too far down to rebuild
  • Decay so deep that a filling has no solid tooth left to hold
  • A tooth loosened by advanced gum disease
  • A damaged tooth that keeps trapping food and irritating the gum

Pain is the reason most people call. The bigger reason to act is what a failing tooth does to the ones beside it.

How a Tooth Extraction Works

  1. Request an appointment online, or call the office during open hours. Tell the front desk which tooth hurts.
  2. Our dentist examines the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to see the root and the bone.
  3. You hear what the exam found in plain words, including whether the tooth can still be saved.
  4. If removal is the right answer, you get the plan and the cost before anything starts.
  5. Our dentist numbs the tooth and the gum around it with local anesthetic.
  6. The tooth is loosened in its socket and lifted out. This part is usually quick.
  7. You get gauze, written aftercare instructions, and answers to anything you want repeated.
  8. If the tooth needs replacing, our dentist walks you through the choices at that same visit.

Your Options for Tooth Extractions

Removal is the last choice, not the first. Where enough solid tooth is left, a dental filling can often save it.

Where gum disease is loosening a tooth, treating the gums may hold it in place, and our dentist can talk you through that option.

When a tooth truly cannot be saved, our dentist removes it using local anesthetic. This office does not offer sedation of any kind, including nitrous oxide. If sedation is what you need to get through treatment, say so and our dentist will refer you.

Some extractions belong with a specialist. Wisdom teeth, impacted teeth, and any surgical removal go to a trusted oral surgeon. Our dentist tells you that up front rather than starting work that should happen elsewhere.

Once a tooth is out, the gap usually needs filling. Your choices include a dental bridge, a denture, or a dental implant restoration. Our dentist explains what each one asks of you.

The Benefits of Getting This Done Right

  • Pain from a failing tooth stops instead of coming back
  • Infection is cleared before it spreads further into the bone
  • The teeth beside the gap keep better support
  • You know the cost before the appointment starts
  • The socket heals cleanly when the aftercare is followed
  • A replacement plan is ready, so the gap is not a surprise later

An extraction rushed and left alone causes trouble later. Done properly, it is the end of the story for that tooth.

How to Know You Need a Tooth Extraction

Only an exam can say for certain. Some signs still point strongly toward a tooth that is past saving.

Signs a tooth may need to come out:

  • Pain that keeps returning in the same tooth after it was already treated
  • A tooth broken off at or below the gum line
  • A large piece of tooth missing, with little solid structure left
  • A tooth that feels loose when you press it with your tongue
  • A bad taste or smell that keeps coming back around one tooth
  • Gums that swell in the same spot again and again
  • A dark or greyish tooth that also hurts

Signs that need a call, not a wait:

  • Pain that keeps you awake, or that pain relief no longer touches
  • Swelling in the gum, cheek, or jaw
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum near a sore tooth
  • Pain along with a fever
  • A tooth that hurts every single time you bite

Call the office during open hours for any of those. We will get you in as soon as the schedule allows.

Signs that mean a hospital emergency room, not a dental office:

  • Trouble breathing or trouble swallowing
  • Swelling spreading toward your eye or down your neck
  • A high fever along with facial swelling
  • Bleeding from the mouth that you cannot get to stop
  • A jaw you think may be broken

Those five are medical problems, not dental appointments. Go to an emergency room or an urgent care center.

What you can do at home while you wait:

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water a few times a day
  • Hold a cold pack against the outside of your cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 off
  • Stick to soft food and chew on the other side
  • Sleep with your head propped up, since lying flat adds pressure
  • Use over-the-counter pain relief, following the label and your doctor's advice
  • Keep brushing the area gently, even when it is sore

Do not press an aspirin tablet against the gum. That old trick burns the soft tissue and never reaches the tooth causing the pain.

If it starts on a Friday or over the weekend:

The office is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Request an appointment online so your message is waiting when the office opens. Use the home care steps above in the meantime.

If any of the five red-flag signs appear, do not wait for Monday. Go to an emergency room or an urgent care center.

What waiting actually costs:

A tooth does not get better on its own. Decay keeps going, and a crack keeps growing.

Pain that fades is not the same as healing. It often means the nerve inside has died, and the infection is still there.

What starts in one tooth can spread into the jaw bone. Lost bone changes which replacement options stay open to you later.

Wait long enough and a routine extraction turns into a surgical one, done by a specialist. The tooth was the same tooth. The waiting is what changed the job.

What our dentist sees that you cannot:

Your mirror shows the front of the tooth. It does not show decay between teeth, a crack down a root, or bone loss under the gum. A digital X-ray shows all three.

Our dentist also reads the pattern. A tooth filled and refilled tells a story. So does an old filling over a cracked root, or gum disease around one tooth. None of that shows from outside.

Ask yourself these:

  • Has this same tooth been treated more than once already?
  • Can you see or feel a hole, a chip, or a rough edge?
  • Does the tooth move at all when you push on it?
  • Does hot or cold set off pain that lingers after you stop?
  • Have you been avoiding chewing on that side for weeks?

One yes is worth a visit. Several yes answers usually mean the tooth is in real trouble.

Now versus later, honestly:

Early on, a tooth in trouble may only need a filling. That is the simplest and cheapest outcome on the table.

Later, the same tooth may need removal plus a replacement. Two treatments instead of one, and a longer road.

We are not going to put invented numbers in front of you. The pattern is simply that small problems cost less to fix than big ones.

What Does a Tooth Extraction Cost?

There is no single price, because no two teeth are in the same condition. These are the factors that move the number.

  • Which tooth it is, and how many roots it has
  • Whether the tooth is whole or broken at the gum line
  • Whether a digital X-ray is needed first
  • Whether infection has to be dealt with as well
  • What you decide to do about the gap afterward

We work with most major dental plans. The front desk checks your benefits before treatment starts, so the number you hear is the real one.

Patients from Green, Uniontown, and Akron can pay by cash, check, or credit card. CareCredit financing is available when you would rather spread larger treatment over time.

Nothing begins until you have the plan and the price and you have said yes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does having a tooth pulled hurt?

Our dentist numbs the tooth and the gum first, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness afterward is normal and settles over a few days.

Will I be put to sleep for the extraction?

No. This office uses local anesthetic only and does not offer sedation or nitrous oxide. If sedation is what you need, our dentist will refer you to someone who provides it.

Do you take out wisdom teeth?

No. Wisdom teeth go to a trusted oral surgeon, and our dentist makes that referral. This office handles routine extractions.

What should I do if a tooth is hurting when the office is closed?

The office is closed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Request an appointment online so your message is waiting when the office opens. Use warm salt water rinses and a cold pack meanwhile. Trouble breathing, spreading swelling, a high fever, or bleeding you cannot stop means an emergency room instead.

What is dry socket, and how would I know?

Dry socket is when the blood clot over the socket comes loose too early. The main sign is a deep ache two or three days after the extraction. A bad taste often comes with it. Call the office during open hours if that happens.

Do I have to replace the tooth after it is out?

Not always, though a gap changes how you chew and lets nearby teeth drift. Our dentist will tell you honestly whether a bridge, a denture, or an implant restoration is worth it.

I’ve been a patient with Summit Dental since they began operations at the Green location. and I have had a couple of fairly extensive procedures done within this calendar year. The staff is typically very punctual at getting you in at your appointment time. Dentist, Dr Young and EFDA, Sheri were both very competent and showed genuine concern for my comfort throughout my procedure.
