Teeth Whitening

Your teeth look darker than they used to. Brushing has not changed it, and whitening toothpaste has not either.

That is because most staining soaks below the surface of the enamel. Professional whitening reaches it. Whitening is one of the cosmetic dentistry services offered here in Green.

You can ask about it at your next visit. There is no pressure and no rush.

What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is a dental treatment that uses bleaching gel to lift stains from tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard outer layer of a tooth.

A dentist applies the gel and watches how your teeth respond. That control is what separates it from a product off a store shelf.

We whiten in the office during a scheduled visit. Your gums get protected first, then the gel goes on the teeth you want brightened.

Problems Teeth Whitening Solves

  • Teeth that look yellow or gray in photos and on video calls.
  • Years of coffee, tea, and red wine staining that a toothbrush cannot reach.
  • A wedding, reunion, or job interview coming up soon.
  • Store-bought whitening that worked slowly or came out blotchy.
  • Hiding your smile in pictures without really meaning to.

How Teeth Whitening Works

  1. You tell us what bothers you about the color of your teeth.
  2. Our dentist checks for decay, cracks, and gum problems first.
  3. We note the shade you are starting from, so any change is measurable.
  4. We cover your gums and lips to keep the gel off soft tissue.
  5. We apply the professional gel to your teeth and let it work.
  6. We rinse, look at the new shade with you, and talk about keeping it.

Whitening works better on a clean tooth surface, so many patients ask about it at a regular visit.

Your Options for Teeth Whitening

In-office professional whitening is what we provide. One scheduled visit, dental-grade gel, and a dentist watching the whole time.

Drugstore strips, pens, and gels are the common alternative. They cost less and work slower. They also do not fit your teeth, so the gel can miss spots and reach your gums.

Whitening toothpaste is a third route. It scrubs surface film only, and it cannot change the color inside the enamel.

Sometimes whitening is simply the wrong tool. Decay, an old dark filling, or discoloration inside the tooth all cause stains gel cannot lift.

Those need a different fix, and our dentist will tell you what that looks like at your visit.

Leaving your teeth alone is a real option too. Whitening is elective, and nothing goes wrong if you skip it.

The Benefits of Getting This Done Right

A dentist checks your mouth before any gel touches a tooth. That step catches decay or gum trouble that whitening would only irritate.

The result also comes out more even. Your gums stay protected, and the gel reaches the teeth that actually show when you smile.

And you get a straight answer. If whitening will not fix what bothers you, we say so before you spend anything.

How to Know You Need Teeth Whitening

Whitening is a want, not a need. Nothing in your mouth gets worse because you did not whiten.

Signs whitening may help:

  • Your teeth photograph darker than you remember them.
  • The color looks even, just dull all over.
  • You drink coffee, tea, or cola most days.
  • You used tobacco at some point.
  • Old photos show you with a brighter smile.

Signs something else is going on, and gel is not the answer:

  • One tooth is much darker than the teeth beside it.
  • A tooth is sensitive to cold or hurts when you bite.
  • You see a brown or black spot rather than general yellowing.
  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss.
  • A front filling no longer matches the tooth around it.

None of those are whitening problems. A single dark tooth or a defined spot means something different. Usually it is decay, a failing restoration, or discoloration inside the tooth.

Internal discoloration means the color change began inside, not on the surface. Bleaching gel cannot reach it, so cosmetic coverage is the honest option.

Whitening itself is never urgent. Some problems in the second list are time-sensitive. Decay and gum disease keep progressing on their own.

Do you have pain, swelling, or bleeding gums? Call during open hours and we will get you in as soon as the schedule allows.

Here is how waiting turns a small thing into a big one. A small brown spot on a tooth is a small filling today. Left alone, decay spreads and the repair grows. Bigger repairs cost more and take more of your own tooth with them.

Here is what a dentist sees that you cannot. Enamel thins as you age, and the layer underneath is naturally more yellow. So part of what looks like staining is thinning enamel, and gel does less for that.

We can also see which front teeth already carry dental work. Bleach does not lighten filling material, so a whitened smile can leave one tooth looking off.

And we can tell surface staining from staining that soaked in. That difference decides whether whitening is worth your money.

A few questions to ask yourself:

  • Is my whole smile dull, or is one tooth off?
  • Does anything hurt, twinge, or bleed?
  • Do I have a filling or other dental work on a front tooth?
  • Am I doing this for me, or because someone suggested it?
  • Is there a date I want to look my best for?

Whitening fits when your teeth and gums are healthy and the dullness is even. If decay or gum disease is active, we treat that first. If one tooth is the problem, something other than whitening usually fits better, and our dentist will tell you what that is.

On cost, waiting on whitening costs you nothing. It is elective, and the price does not climb because you thought it over.

Waiting on the problems in the second list is different. A small repair now stays smaller and cheaper than the same tooth treated much later. That is not a scare tactic, it is just how decay behaves.

What Does Teeth Whitening Cost?

Whitening is priced by the treatment. A few things move the number:

  • How much staining you start with, and how many visits it takes.
  • Whether your teeth need a cleaning first.
  • Whether existing front-tooth dental work has to be matched afterward.
  • Whether decay or gum treatment has to come first.

Cosmetic treatment like whitening is usually not covered by dental insurance, while a filling usually is. We work with most major dental plans, and the front desk checks your benefits before treatment starts.

CareCredit financing can spread larger treatment over time. We take cash, check, and credit card. You hear the price before anything begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much whiter will my teeth get?

That depends on your starting shade and the kind of staining you have. We record your shade first and give you an honest read before we begin.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Not when a dentist supervises it. We check your teeth first, protect your gums, and control how long the gel stays on.

Will my teeth be sensitive afterward?

Some people feel short-lived cold sensitivity. Tell us if your teeth are already sensitive and we adjust the treatment.

Will whitening change my fillings?

No. Bleaching gel lightens natural enamel only, so dental work keeps its original color. We plan around front-tooth restorations.

Can I whiten if I have a cavity or bleeding gums?

Not yet. We treat decay and gum problems first, because gel on an unhealthy tooth causes pain and poor results.

Do drugstore whitening products work?

They work slowly and unevenly. They are not shaped to your teeth, so gel misses spots and can sit on your gums.

I’ve been a patient with Summit Dental since they began operations at the Green location. and I have had a couple of fairly extensive procedures done within this calendar year. The staff is typically very punctual at getting you in at your appointment time. Dentist, Dr Young and EFDA, Sheri were both very competent and showed genuine concern for my comfort throughout my procedure.
